Coltishall pub landlord Kevin Gardner is at the centre of media attention today after it was revealed he landed 1320lb Atlantic Blue marlin off Ascension Island – the best ever caught by a British angler.

Kevin, who runs the King’s Head at Coltishall with wife Sue, took three hours to land  the monster fish during a 10-day trip to the island in the Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and Africa.

“It has gone bonkers today,” he said. “It was a very, very special fish.” He and fishing partner Phil Riley, who runs Five Star Travel in Liverpool, have been inundated with calls from local and national media, as well as magazines from Italy, France and Australia after news spread of the catch, the fourth biggest marlin ever caught on rod

It was not plain sailing, though, for 49-year-old Kevin, who was exhausted after the fight and left with sunburn on his feet and blisters on his hands.

Kevin was stunned by the news of his record catch and has brought back the spike from the fish, which is with a taxidermist and will be displayed in the pub.

He also landed a 234lb big-eye tuna during the trip, which regulars to the King’s Head have a chance to sample if they’re quick as it’s on the menu.
