It’s been a hub for community events and groups for 54 years, and now Hellesdon Community Centre (HCC) has opened another chapter in its history by stepping into the 21st century with a brand new website.

It is hoped the new website will be seen as the first port of call for Hellesdon residents who are looking for activities to join, events to attend and opportunities for friendship with fellow residents.

The site has been created by web designer John Knowles. “I was interested in ensuring the future of the community centre for the people of Hellesdon,” said John, who was elected as a trustee and volunteered to organise the hosting, design and development of a website.

“I was involved in Norfolk Education for 30 years as a teacher and a head teacher of three different primary and middle schools, and latterly as the Norfolk senior adviser for primary school management. Part of that work was to develop computer systems to assist schools with their management.”

This led John to an interest in computing and digital design – and his work of the last 19 years in digital publishing – mainly for the world of theatre but also locally as the volunteer web designer for the Maddermarket Theatre.

“Creating a website for the communtiy centre seemed a contribution that I could make to further its desire to improve communications with its activity groups, hirers and users, and offer an opportunity for the centre to explain and market all the opportunities it provides for Hellesdon residents.

“The centre has 85pc take up of its facilities – a figure that demonstrates how successful it is at supporting Hellesdon residents.”

The website took a while to get off the ground in order to ensure that it meshed seamlessly into the centre’s telephone and business services supplied by BT.

It finally went live in May and has already created real interest and is starting to show its worth by triggering enquiries at the centre.

The website took about a week to design and set up – but it’s an ongoing publication that never ends as sections on the history of the centre, its facilities and contact points are added. It is planned to become a major resource for the HCC Charity Trust.

Currently it includes a short history of the centre, details of facilities and events and a Twitter stream that is updated most days with the latest news.

In order that the centre’s management and administration is transparent to the residents of Hellesdon the site includes a growing collection of documents in the form of policies, accounts, agendas and minutes of meetings, booking forms, guidance to hirers, rules and regulations and emergency procedures.
