One of the most popular dance shows in the world is heading back to Norwich Theatre Royal and will feature a performer with strong Norfolk links.

Opera singer Benjamin Lake, who lives just outside the city and has family from the county, will join the ensemble cast for Spirit Of The Dance to perform songs in the high-energy show.

Over a decade old, the production has now been seen by more than 30 million people around the globe and returns to Norwich Theatre Royal by public demand on August 6-10.

Joining Benjamin in the show will be top dancer Scott Gillies, who has been working with the show’s producers Spirit Productions for 14 years and starred in their shows in every continent of the world.

Spirit of the Dance promises a wide range of dance styles on stage mixing the frenetic rhythm of Irish dancing with a host of other genres like tango, flamenco and salsa for a high energy all-action production featuring an ensemble of highly talented performers.

Inspired by Riverdance, it follows the story of a fictional Spirit who tours the world looking for the secret of peace and love.

Producer and creator David King, who also produced recent Norwich Theatre Royal hits Bohemian Rhapsody and New Jersey Nights, said Spirit Of The Dance has changed and evolved over the years. He said: “I have lived every minute of it, creating the themes, and putting all the pieces of the jigsaw in place.

“The original concept was conceived, produced and composed in just three months, which I believe is an all-time record. I would write new music to match the changing moods of the show, and waited on tenterhooks for the audiences to give their approval.”

And he said the show always gets an incredible reaction from those who are coming to see it. He said: “Quite often, I will sit in the theatre and just watch the audience’s reactions to the show. The feeling I get when I see and hear the joy and delight of audiences all over the world is simply the best feeling imaginable. It makes all the endless hours and sleepless nights creating and enhancing it worthwhile.”
