Students at North Walsham High School will be asking for ‘more’ when they take to the stage to present a production of Oliver! from 11th to 14th March.

The Lionel Bart musical has been popular with both adults and children since it first hit the West End stage in 1960.  Based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, it tells the tale of an orphan boy and his survival against the odds, set amongst the colourful characters of Charles Dickens’ Victorian London, including Fagin, the Artful Dodger and Nancy.

The show includes a host of well-known musical numbers, including Food, Glorious Food; You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two; As Long As He Needs Me; and Oom Pah Pah!

The cast and crew have been busy rehearsing the show since the beginning of the school year in September, and will be joined on stage by a Staffordshire terrier called Millie, playing the role of Bill Sikes’ dog Bullseye.

To add to the Dickensian atmosphere, the set will be dressed with three real coffins, donated by North Walsham funeral directors Murrell Cork – one scene calls for Oliver, played by 12-year-old Thomas Dugmore, to be shut into one of them.

North Walsham High School Head of Drama Victoria Christie, who is directing the production, said, “Oliver! is such a great show, both for the cast and the audience.  It has a fantastic mix of humour, drama and really catchy tunes, and the cast have really enjoyed rehearsing it over the past two terms.

“We are so lucky to have the wonderful Atrium stage and auditorium in which to perform, so this is a chance for these young people to experience the excitement and nerves of a real live theatre.

“It promises to be a really entertaining night, and we hope that the people of North Walsham will come and enjoy the show.”

Oliver runs from Tuesday 11th March to Friday 14th March at The Atrium at North Walsham High School.  Tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for concessions, available online at, or by phoning the box office on 01692 400080.
