City College Norwich’s Hotel School and the Holiday Inn Norwich North are celebrating after their Hotel Takeover initiative scooped the Education Pipeline Award at this year’s Springboard Awards for Excellence.

The annual takeover has provided industry specific work experience opportunities for thousands of young people over a 17-year period and sees many hard working students securing jobs as a direct result.

The Education Pipeline Award, sponsored by Serviceline, recognises the achievements of teams who provide a continuous stream of education opportunities for apprentices and trainees. Judges described the Hotel Takeover as a “great partnership” between the college and the hotel that “has bridged the gap between classroom and workplace with creativity and flare”.

The takeover event sees staff throughout the 4-star Holiday Inn Norwich North hotel, up to and including the general manager, taking a step back to allow students to take on their jobs over a five-day period. Students cover everything from reception, to housekeeping, bar management, food preparation, food service and supervisory and management roles.

Alongside this, students also end the event by hosting a gala dinner in the hotel’s Lancaster Suite where they provide catering and front of house service for over 300 guests to raise money for hospitality charity Springboard and City College Norwich’s Student Opportunities Fund.

Bill Heath, general manager, Holiday Inn Norwich North said: “So many students have benefited from the experience and each year it changes allowing more and more students to take part and get a real life hands on experience of what really happens in the hospitality industry.
