Throughout the lockdown, staff and volunteers have been busy at Falcon Junior School, in Sprowston, making sure their pupils, their families and anyone in need is being looked after.

Falcon Junior has always been known as a real community school that cares very much about its pupils and families, often referring to its community as the “Falcon Family”.

“It was therefore really important to us to set up a foodbank in order for us to help our families in this time of need,” said site manager Matt Smith. “The foodbank started at the end of March and there has been an amazing response to it, with many people and local businesses dropping off donations on their daily exercise walks past the school.”

Sprowston Community Academy has also joined the team to help support their families, too.

“We have been able to give some of our families and members of the local community in need a lovely food hamper from the foodbank. There has been a variety of food donated enabling families to make a number of meals with the hamper they are receiving,” said Matt.

Matt has been making up the hampers of essentials – and a few treats – and said he had been touched by the appreciation from the families who have already received one.

He said he is relishing the task of putting more together and getting them to those that need them, saying: “We are averaging around 70 food parcels a week at the moment.”
Lots of individuals and local businesses have been keeping the stocks topped up and Matt thanked everyone for their kindness.

“We would still like to welcome any donations from the community and local businesses to keep the foodbank growing and moving forward,” he said.

Hampers are made up and loaded into the school minibus to be distributed to those who need them.

Donations can be dropped off at the donation point just inside the double blue gates or outside the Year 6 building on the Upper School Playground from 8am to 3pm on weekdays. The playground is on Falcon Road West, Sprowston, NR7 8NT.

If you are struggling or know of anyone who is because your income has decreased, or you are self-isolating and are unable to get to the shops and require a food hamper the school can help. Please contact the school office via office@falcon.sch.uk or phone: 01603 441417.
