As the summer holidays get officially under way, the staff at Cecil Gowing Infant School, in Sprowston, want to share their appreciation for the support they have had from families over the past few weeks.

Head Isabel Stubbs said: “We understand the pressures they have been under staying home to keep safe, while many have been juggling home-schooling with their own working from home, plus coping with the difficulties of living with the worry and restrictions of covid-19.

“We have been pleased to be able to offer support to our parents who have been working as keyworkers throughout this difficult time and we have been impressed by their resilience and that of their children.

“As we move forward, I am sure we will all remember what became the ‘new norm’ of home- schooling!  At Cecil Gowing we had a special little star who kept children engaged and on track… Riley, the most laid- back little dog you could ever find!  He helped our Year One children keep on track with his fun costumes and relaxed attitude.”

One of his most popular outfits had an outing on Star Wars Day – May 4 – when he dressed up and helped his owner, Mrs Bowden, who came as Princess Leia, to teach Hedgehog class how to count in twos, fives and 10s.

Mrs Stubbs added: “Riley became a firm favourite and his speciality is maths, so he helped teach the children about place value, capacity and money, throughout the period of lockdown.  Thank you, Riley.”

The school will be keeping parents informed over the summer to ensure a smooth transition in September but in the meantime all the pupils and their families are urged to enjoy the summer break.
