Proposals to build 345 new homes on a site off Norwich Road, in Aylsham, have been put in the spotlight again after an official planning application was submitted.

Developers want to build 255 homes and 90 ‘extra care’ units on mainly agricultural land and the site of the former Aylsham Lodge Hotel.

In response, Aylsham Town Council announced two meetings would be held to discuss the proposals and formulate an official response to send to Broadland District Council’s planning department.

The first meeting is due to be held at 7pm on Wednesday, February 1 with the council’s full response to be presented during a meeting at Aylsham Town Hall on Thursday, February 9 (7pm).

Members of the public have been invited to attend both meetings. An Aylsham Town Council statement said of the February 1 meeting: “Instead of the usual monthly meeting this will be a one-topic meeting to allow greater participation by the public and then discussion and outline decision by the council.

“Then on Thursday, February 9 (7pm), the full response will be presented and agreed to be sent off immediately after the meeting.

“Although this date is past the requested date for responses, it has been agreed by Broadland planners to allow this extension.

“The final decision will be made by Broadland District Council at a future planning meeting (date not yet known).”

Matters to be discussed by the council include the number of properties, the amount of affordable housing, design, transport (including footpaths), open spaces, water and waste issues and climate factors.

The planning application has been submitted by Norfolk Homes and Saffron Housing and also includes proposals for public open space and a community “transport hub”.

In total, 33 per cent of the development will be classed as affordable housing, including the entire 90-unit care scheme.

The Norwich Road site is one of two areas in Aylsham earmarked major housing developments. Also highlighted in the Greater Norwich Local Plan are proposals for 300 homes and a new primary school off Burgh Road.

The full Norwich Road planning application can be viewed on Broadland District Council’s planning portal (reference number – 20222089).
