Aylsham Heritage Centre is looking for new volunteers to join its team as its 2023 season gets under way.
The centre, based in the grounds of Aylsham Parish Church, reopened at the start of March and has launched a new exhibition featuring personal diaries spanning 200 years.
It holds events and welcomes visitors throughout the year and it needs some more help from volunteers.

Learning Officer Jayne Andrew said: “We have a really fantastic team of volunteers who man the centre during the week and we need some more people to join the team. Could you be that someone?”

The centre has holes in its volunteer timetable on a Tuesday afternoon and a Thursday morning. The morning shifts are 10.30am-1pm and the afternoon shifts are 1-3.30pm.
“The only skill you need is to be able to make people feel welcome,” added Jayne. “No special knowledge of Aylsham or its history is needed.

“Some of our volunteers enjoy exploring the photograph archive and undertaking a little research during their time here; some like to enjoy the peace and quiet of the centre and its setting as a little oasis in the week.”
Some of the current volunteers have explained why they enjoy working at the centre:

– “You feel part of a team doing something worthwhile and it’s very satisfying to feel you’re contributing to the life of the town. You meet lots of new people, learn useful skills and have a chance to broaden your knowledge in many different ways. And it’s fun!”

– “I’ve enjoyed being a volunteer since the Centre opened in 2011 for many reasons. As an incomer, I’ve learned much of the history of the town and sharing my duty with an Aylsham born and bred partner has taught me even more.”

– “Visitors are varied. More than I expected come from abroad and many come because they are on holiday in the area…”

– “It really is a gem and visitors are quick to point out that we’re lucky to have it.”
