Former detective Gary Powell has opened a new chapter in his writing career and released his first novel.

The Sheringham-based author has swapped facts for fiction to publish Mind the Killer – a murder mystery set mainly in London but which also includes several local scenes.

Gary worked as a detective with the British Transport Police for more than 30 years and much of the action is set on the capital’s Underground network.

“The British Transport Police are very under-represented in modern-day crime fiction – it’s not very often the force is mentioned, so I thought it would be good to highlight my old force,” he said.

“I have done a few murder inquiries in my time and was posted to the anti-terrorist branch of Scotland Yard for eight years.”

Gary, 64, who is an avid crime fiction reader, said that penning a novel seemed like a natural progression.

“I have always fancied doing it and I felt I had got to the end of writing about true crime,” he said.

He began writing around 2009 – shortly before he left the police – and published his first book on a social history of the iconic London Square, called Square London, in 2012.

He followed it with three books on true crime and is a member of the Crime Writers’ Association.

He retired to Sheringham – the scene of many happy family holidays – in 2016.

Mind the Killer evolved during the lockdown period, and Gary is hoping to have a book launch at The Kitchen in Sheringham next month.

Its sequel is being edited and Gary is already working on the third novel in the series.

While writing the first book, he had a job as a sales assistant at Bakers and Larners in Holt. He now works as a part-time caretaker at Sheringham Community Centre and enjoys giving talks to local groups.

Although Gary and his wife Karen are loving life in north Norfolk, he maintains a London link as he travels down every two weeks to be a guide at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Mind the Killer can be ordered on Amazon, Waterstones and other platforms.
