Local slimmers have raised £11456 for Cancer Research UK after taking part in a national annual clothes throw in a national clothes throw.

Taverham Slimming World Group, who meet at Hinks Meadow on Thursdays, donated 358 bags of pre-loved items from April 14-27 raising a “fabulous” £32 a bag!

The event invites members to mark their weight losses by donating the clothes that no longer fit them (and they know they’ll never need again). It celebrates a fresh start and the opportunity to physically – and mentally – get rid of the clothes they’ve slimmed out of for good.

A HUGE LOSS: Chelsea Pennell and members with the 358 bags of pre-loved items that were donated to Cancer Research UK.

Chelsea Pennell, who runs the Taverham groups, said: “I am totally blown away by the total raised this year. My dad was diagnosed with lymphoma in December and this year two of my lovely members have been diagnosed too, so this year more than ever I have made it my mission to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy charity. I am so proud of my members, not only to be their Slimming World consultant but to be able to make such a difference to Cancer Research UK.”

Last year, Slimming World members, consultants and head office staff raised £1,491,191 for Cancer Research UK through The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw and is aiming to raise even more this year.

Chelsea thanked her members Ellen Guild, Sue Hales, Barbara Cross-Gower and Carolyn Penn (who have lost over 14 stone between them!) who helped to transport the donations.

She added: “We all know that being overweight has been shown to increase the risk of developing cancer. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight could prevent around 22,800 cases of cancer every year in the UK.”
