Wroxham Under-10s coach DANNY SWEATMAN pays tribute to his cup-winning youngsters

We did it. What a journey. What a season. What a group of boys.

At the start of the season, I asked whether families could support us coaches by continuing to praise our boys but refraining from instructing them.

As coaches, we promised we would do the same.

I wanted our boys to take on a challenge – a challenge that would give them the courage to make decisions for themselves. I quickly began to witness something very special with our Kingfishers. They began to show bravery on the ball, encouraged one another, showed resilience and became leaders.

On Saturday, January 20, we played Old Catton Mambas – our second league match. Just 10 minutes in, I witnessed what made me genuinely believe we were going to win the cup.

They were fierce, hungry and playing with freedom and enjoyment.

I remember sharing my thoughts with coach Michael and a few of our Kingfisher dads. I’m sure they thought that I had lost the plot!

After beating Lowestoft and Attleborough in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively, our Kingfisher boys had made it.

On Saturday, May 11, a final against Thorpe St Andrew Jaguars awaited us.

I sent the boys a video the evening
before the game, reminding them of
how utterly proud I was and how unbelievably brilliant they were.

I wanted them to go out and show a sold-out FDC Open Academy exactly what I had seen throughout the season…and they did.

Our Kingfishers were simply magnificent.

I have felt privileged to coach both our Wroxham Kingfishers and our Wroxham Harriers again this season and I’m so excited to begin the next chapter.

The future is bright. We have a team of dedicated coaches and a group of boys that inspire and motivate us to want to continue to give them every opportunity to be the best that they can be.

As Pele said: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and, most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”
