Some of the world’s best crabbers will be gathering on Cromer Pier this August Bank Holiday Sunday to see who will win the World Pier Crabbing Championships.

Crowds of people are expected to line the length of the pier to vie for the coveted title, which attracts entrants and spectators from far and wide.

And on the same day, around 60 decorated mooring post lamps will be displayed on the pier forecourt before being auctioned for charity.

The colourful and wonderfully decorated mooring post lamps have adorned shop windows, parks, hotels, pubs and guesthouses across north Norfolk as part of the Crab and Lobster Festival’s annual art trail.

The auction, which has become a staple event for the festival, will be the only time people will be able to see all the decorated lamps displayed together.

The day starts with the crabbing contest at 10am, when the judges will be looking for the greatest number of crabs caught on a line or net – with a prize for the largest crab.

The title will be decided on the largest number of crabs caught on a handline.

All the crabs will be returned to the sea within 10 minutes of being caught.

Registration is from 9.30am.

The auction will take place at 12.30pm and there will be a market on the prom throughout the festivities.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said: “Hundreds of visitors and local families have followed the Art Trail through the season.

“The auction is your chance to bid for your favourite and is the climax to this year’s festival.”
