A triumph from the tragedy

Some years ago, as soon as it became apparent that it was 150 years since the Thorpe Rail Disaster had occurred, Thorpe Players Theatre Company felt they would like to ‘do something’ to commemorate this historic event.

Ideas were mooted and that ’something’ became the decision for the Players to write their own play.

Many other accounts of the tragedy had been written but most focused on the actual facts that were deemed to have occurred. As ideas were suggested, gathered and sorted it became apparent that interest should centre around four major areas – the people involved, the events, the resulting court cases and the outcomes of this devastating tragedy.

A great deal of research followed and the need to present the facts accurately was given the utmost most importance. Much refinement and rewriting took place to fashion and shape the play.

From the outset and initial reading, the play was met with approval planning and rehearsing all aspects of the production took place over a three-month period.

Bookings were steady and eventually resulted in a sell-out for all three nights. The play was different. Local Thorpe residents were keen to learn what had occurred on that fateful night. The publicity from a TV interview, local media, posters and handbills in local businesses and promotion on social media prompted many to satisfy their curiosity and obtain a ticket.

From the feedback received it seems they were not disappointed.

‘Lovely to see the characters come to life’

‘Just to say I thought the production was excellent last night and your performance was first class.

’ My congratulations to the Thorpe Players.’

‘The end part when you all stood with your backs to us and read out names brought tears to my eyes’

‘A noteworthy achievement for all concerned’

‘I have been an amateur lighting man for over thirty years, but I must say that this was the best production by any group that I have ever seen. It was excellent throughout.’ Verbal feedback commented on the ingenuity of the set design and the slickness of the set changes, together with the authenticity of costumes worn by the actors.

Director David Watson stated, as he thanked the company for all of their hard work and commitment, ‘that this had enabled Thorpe Players to stage a production of which we can all be proud’

In order to give the audience the best ‘all round’ experience Phyllida Scrivens, who is renowned for her book ‘The Great Thorpe Rail Disaster’ was available at the intervals to chat with individuals.

As part of their preparation for performance and exploring the characters involved, many of the cast admit they have an affinity with the character they played and are already researching further information about them. Curiosity has been awakened!                – Jan Jones
