North Walsham
Air Cadets leader Alan bows out
Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens has retired after 10 years as Commanding Officer of North Walsham’s ATC Squadron. During his time at the helm dozens of young men and women have passed through the Squadron, moving on to careers in the Forces, as nurses, paramedics, and airline cabin crew and explored other exciting avenues. Numbers have been boosted from a low level to around 30 cadets currently.
Cadets have been flying, shooting, parachuting and have attended adventure camps and RAF camps both in the UK and abroad. They have attained Duke of Edinburgh Awards, BTECs and first aid qualifications as Flt Lt Stevens led a team of dedicated staff to ensure that all cadets gained the most they could from their experiences.
“After nearly 17 years in the RAF Air Cadets it is time for me to step aside for a new generation of young staff to continue and improve the experience for the young cadets” he said.
Three new cadets, Holly East, Amie Bowles and Beth Picton were enrolled by the squadron padre, the Rev Colin Telfer at Flt Lt Stevens’ final parade, attended by Town Mayor, Cllr Bob Wright, Squadron Leader Kevin Green and several proud parents.
Cadets Lily Harfield and James Gould were promoted to corporal and Sgt Max Bedford received his BTEC level 2 Diploma before the Rev Telfer presented Flt Lt Stevens with retirement gifts from an appreciative Squadron.

FAREWELL GIFT: Sqdn Padre the Rev Colin Telfer presents a farewell gift to Flt Lt Alan Stevens at his final parade event.
Flt Lt Stevens led the Squadron in a march past, his last formal duty with the Air Cadets before retirement.
The evening concluded with the Civilian Committee AGM where two much-needed new recruits joined. The Squadron still needs enthusiastic committee members from the local community and would warmly welcome any volunteers.
