The owners of Amazona Zoo in Cromer, Norfolk, are celebrating with the birth of its first Squirrel Monkey (on 14th July), who has come out in public with its mother for the first time today.

The gestation of a Squirrel Monkey is approximately 60 days and there were no issues with the birth where it is normal for Squirrel Monkeys to have only one in their litter.

Head Zoo Keeper, Imogen White says: “Mum and little one are doing really well. This is mum’s first baby and in turn our first squirrel monkey baby. We don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet as at this age they just cling tightly to mum, once it becomes more independent, which will be a few weeks away yet, we will then be able to sex it.”

Squirrel Monkeys can live up to 21 years of age, weigh around 9.5kg and are omnivorous.
