Big cat is back at base

After a lifetime of service, a Jaguar has returned to the former airbase which, for several decades, was home to the iconic planes.

Although this GR1 jet was never based there, RAF Coltishall was an exclusive base for Jaguars from the early 1970s – when they were on the frontline of the Cold War and the Gulf Wars in the 1990s – until its closure in 2006.

So it is fitting that it is now taking up residence at the RAF Coltishall Heritage Centre.

“This particular aircraft was based in Germany,” said trustee Carl Lamb. “When it retired it went to RAF Cosford, where mechanics were trained on it.

“It’s a lifelong ambition come true to have a Jaguar back at Coltishall after 18 years.”

He said it was quite a coup to get it as, although it was given to them, there was a hefty £10,000 bill to be met to transport it.

“We are a charity so we had a crowdfunder and raised the money,” said Carl.

“We had 201 people make a contribution and we plan to have a plaque with all their names on.”

It used to fly at 850mph, but the plane had a more sedate journey from the Midlands on the back of a transporter, with its wings travelling separately.

Now it is in line for some TLC from the volunteers at the centre and it is hoped that it will be ready for the public to have a good look round at the beginning of September.

As well as being admired, the plane will be used to educate people about both its own history and the story behind the base.

The ground attack aircraft – XZ384 – “signed up” in 1977 and was retired in the 1980s, so saw active service in the Cold War.

“We lived through those years and it represents the importance of Coltishall as it was an integral part of it,” said Carl. “It is very exciting and emotional.”
