It may have been pipped at the post, but The Holt Bookshop is celebrating making the regional shortlist for the independent bookshop of the year category at The British Book Awards 2024.

The awards are a celebration of “books, and all who make and sell them”, and Pam Horrocks and Keith Britten, who bought the shop during the first lockdown in 2020, were delighted to have been chosen as one of the select few.

Pam said: “We were thrilled to become a regional finalist.

“The fact that this award comes from a panel of our peers gives us a great sense of achievement and pride.”

Since buying the shop, with all the subsequent lockdowns and economic turbulence, they have opened a second shop specialising in secondhand, collectors, and gift books, providing the town with its first antiquarian bookshop in more than five years.

Regular customer Angela Glynn said: “It’s a small shop but punches many times above its weight.”

The award was won by Kett’s Books in Wymondham.

The others on the shortlist were The Book Hive, Bookbugs and Dragon Tales in Norwich, Kett’s Books in Wymondham, Niche Comics Bookshop in Huntingdon, David’s Bookshop in Letchworth, Next Page Books in Hitchin, and Maldon Books.
