As the summer draws to an end Norfolk Police Broadsbeat team have again teamed up with the local safer neighbourhood teams to offer boat owners a helping hand in securing their property over the winter.
Marine engine covers are available in three sizes to fit the vast majority of outboard engines, and can be purchased from Fakenham Police Station public enquiry office for between £28 and £34 depending on the size. Boat owners are then able to replace the top plastic engine cowling with a Norfolk Police cover making the engine far less attractive to would be thieves.
This is the third year this scheme has been in operation in the North Norfolk area and officers have seen a reduction in outboard engine thefts. To date no engine fitted with the Police engine cover has been stolen.
Sergeant Toby Gosden, Crime manager for North Norfolk, explained: “This successful scheme is now in its third year and is a simple yet effective way of protecting your outboard engine. Theft of an outboard engine can cause damage to the boat leaving the owner with a repair bill for the boat as well as the financial loss of the engine. We have seen encouraging results for those owners who have invested in an engine cover and I would certainly encourage others to do the same.”
