A café launched in 2021 to combat loneliness and social isolation following the Covid-19 pandemic has just celebrated its fifth birthday.

The Unity Café, based at Aylsham Community Church in Norwich Road, marked the landmark anniversary with a special birthday event, complete with cake.

The café is open every Thursday from 9am to 11.30am all year round. It is free but donations are welcomed.

Sarah Mason, the café’s team leader, said: “By offering a friendly and inclusive environment, the café encourages people to connect, socialise, and develop a sense of belonging within their community.

“Over the years, it has been a privilege to see the difference the café has made in the lives of those who attend.”

Comments and reflections from those who have attended the café include: “I started to come with my husband who has dementia and he was able to reconnect with old friends. He can’t come anymore, but I made some new friends and continue to come regularly.”

Another regular said: “I enjoy socialising and getting to know people.”

And a third person added: “Everyone’s so welcoming plus we get delicious homemade cake!”

One of the recent additions to the café has been a pre-school play area.

Sarah said: “Our vision was to create a welcoming space where parents and carers can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while their children play and socialise with friends in a safe and friendly environment.”

She added: “Throughout the years, the café has also served as a ‘warm space’, providing lunches and a place of comfort and companionship for those who need it. We are pleased to say that we remain open throughout the year and continue to support our local community in a variety of ways.

“During the summer holidays, we offer a range of free activities for children, including air hockey, table football, pool, table tennis, crafts, and other fun opportunities to play and connect.
“As a church, our community cupboard is open on the same day from 9-10am for any member of the local community to share free food and other household items. We receive donations from local businesses with the aim to stop as much food going to landfill as possible. As we look ahead to the future, our commitment remains the same: to provide a place where everyone feels welcome, valued, and part of the community.”
