The Dardan Security Rugby Sevens tournament at North Walsham RFC’s Norwich Road, Scottow ground kicks off this Sunday (29th May) with a record number of teams entering the competition and a great day of entertainment in prospect.

The event, sponsored for the first time by Norwich based security specialists, Dardan Security, has attracted 20 men’s teams, eight women’s teams and four teams who will be playing the fast growing sport of touch rugby.

The day will also feature a visit from Leicester Tigers who will be bringing interactive games including the tackle bag and the speed pass challenge as well as lots of giveaways. Special guest will be the Tigers’ mascot, Welford, who will be making a number of appearances during the day. Leicester Tigers are holding a training camp at North Walsham RFC in August.

Prior to the men’s final, there will be a charity ‘boat race’, which will hopefully stretch the entire length of the 1st team pitch, in aid of Stay Strong Stu, a charity that has been supported by a wide sporting community and set up in memory of Stu Ridley, a 25 year old farmer and player with Tynedale RFC who sadly lost his battle against a brain tumour last year.

With a hog roast and many other food offerings and the now famous Norfolk beer festival, which features 24 Norfolk ales and four Norfolk ciders, the event is billed as a full day of fun for the family.

According to one of the event organisers, Dan Goodrich, the form book shows that it could be a hard fought battle for honours. “This year’s Dardan Security Rugby Sevens is looking like it will be the best ever, with a full complement of teams for all competitions, many of whom have competed before as well as some exciting new names: and they’re coming from all over the country.

“We’re expecting a hard fought competition in both men’s and ladies competitions, so it’ll be a great day of rugby. The touch rugby competition is growing too. This is a great sport that attracts both men and women of all ages. Its popularity in Norfolk is seeing a number of teams springing up all over the county.”

Phil Anthony of Dardan Security said: “We are very pleased to be sponsoring the Dardan Rugby Sevens at North Walsham. It’s a fantastic celebration of rugby in Norfolk that is attracting sevens teams from far and wide as well as from our local clubs. Having enjoyed a great day there last year, we felt we wanted to get involved and support the tournament this year. We’re sure it’s going to be a very enjoyable and fun, family day and are very pleased to put our name to it.”

The tournament starts at 11am and runs until around 6pm. Each seven-a-side game lasts seven minutes each way, with the final 10 minutes each way. Games are played concurrently on four pitches, providing spectators with plenty to see.

The Men’s cup finalists will play for The Jill Hambling Cup and a first prize of £750, with the runners up receiving £250.

The Men’s plate finalists will play for the Vikings Plate and a first prize of £350, with the runners up receiving £150.

Women’s shield finalists will play for the George Campbell Shield and a first prize of £350, with the runners up receiving £150.

North Walsham RFC is at Norwich Road, Scottow NR10 5BU. Entry to the tournament is £3 per person and car parking is free.
