Nearly three years after a devastating fire razed Holt’s only supermarket to the ground, the new Budgens store is set to reopen next week.

The first customers will be let in at 10am on Thursday, March 30, and there will be a day of treats and surprises for shoppers.

Early birds could be in for a real bonus as the first 1,000 shoppers will be handed goodie bags worth £30.

There will also be a chance to win your shopping and free tastings of some of the local produce being stocked on the shelves.

Following the fire in July 2020, the town was left in shock having lost such an important facility.

Reacting quickly, the CT Baker Group helped to restore a lifeline – introducing a pop-up post office at Bakers and Larners department store and starting work on a temporary supermarket.

Built in the car park next to where the fire had destroyed the original building, it opened in November 2020.

Havercroft Construction began work on the new store in November 2021 and it is now being fitted out by the CT Baker Budgens team.

And after a dramatic start, the project faced many challenges due to global events.

The war in Ukraine impacted the availability of many raw materials, and the Suez Canal blockage also caused supply disruption in addition to the ongoing effects of covid-19 and successive lockdowns.

Carl Milton, managing director of the CT Baker Group, said: “We’ve continued our long-standing relationships with Norfolk suppliers throughout our time at the pop-up store, and we look forward to showcasing them on our opening weekend.

“Our family business is now 253 years old and I believe our future is as just important as our rich history.

“I’m extremely proud of the team who have worked tirelessly on this project and we look forward to reopening our doors to the community on March 30.”

Features will include self-serve checkouts, refill stations and a new loyalty scheme.

Store manager Sandra Taylor-Meeds said: “We are thrilled to be opening our new grocery store and can’t wait to start serving the people of Holt in our new surroundings. This shop has been such an important asset for the residents here and the launch of this new building is sure to make a real difference.”

The temporary store will remain trading until 3pm on Wednesday, March 29.
