Everybody needs Good Neighbours

North Walsham Good Neighbours – working in partnership with North Walsham Town Council and North Norfolk District Council – has been working flat out since the start of this crisis to provide support and information to residents of North Walsham, writes chairman Paul Robinson.

Following the distribution of leaflets to every household in town, giving details of the help available by ringing 01692 558321, there has been an amazing response from local people. We have received hundreds of calls from residents asking for information and support, and many others have volunteered to help by picking up and delivering prescriptions, shopping and other essential items. Volunteers are also providing support to isolated people through regular friendly phone chats, as well as letter and card writing.

Volunteers who are already security checked have been trained and are already going about their tasks. Others are in the process of being checked and are helping with tasks that do not involve direct contact with vulnerable neighbours. The scheme is determined to limit any risk to neighbours and volunteers through the work they are doing.

Co-ordinators have provided a listening ear and have pointed people to where they can get help – for example from local stores who are able to receive orders and payments by phone and then deliver them. The coordinators have also connected callers who need extra support to volunteers who have been picking up and delivering essential shopping and medicines to them.

North Walsham Good Neighbours is working closely with North Norfolk District Council’s local co-ordination centre, which has a  dedicated support line on 01263 516000.
