Aylsham Recreation Ground committee has reassured the town that the future of the facility is viable and secure.

Acting chairman Bean Lumb talked to Just Regional after reports that the ground was struggling with a funding deficit.

“The future of the Rec is totally viable and is managed by a committee who feel passionate about it. We intend to continue providing this facility so the legacy of Gerry Grimes lives on.”

Gerry was a champion of the Rec and was chairman until his recent death.

Bean, who paid tribute to Gerry’s work at his funeral last week, said the Rec committee and the town council were working closely to ensure that the facilities there continued to be a part of the town.

She said discussions between the two parties on the running of the committee and the ground had been ongoing for some time and the plan was they would be working together closely.

Budget issues were raised at a meeting of the town council last week.

Bean said: “Every year the Recreation Ground Committee applies to the town council for funding so that it can manage the ground on behalf of the town. This year, we had to significantly increase the amount asked for. This was because we are putting funds in reserve for the future and also because we need to allow for repairs that need to take place on the Rec. We are really happy that we have the town council’s support.”

The committee also receives rental income that helps to keep the Rec running.

She said even though Aylsham Football Club was no longer using the Rec for matches, the field and pavilion were still being well used by the community, including Action for Children.

“We have always had a great relationship with Aylsham Football Club and we are thrilled that they have their amazing new facilities. We are all working together for the future of Aylsham and its growing community,” said Bean.

She also reassured residents that the rec would be in the town for many generations to come. “It is public space owned by the people of Aylsham and is protected from any kind of development.”

Plans for 2016 include replacing fencing around the Rec and the committee will be applying for grants and looking at ways to fundraise.

This is one of the most used facilities of its kind in this areas and we want that continue well into the future,” added Bean.

The committee is always on the lookout for volunteers to get involved in the running of the rec and with fundraising. If you think you can help give Bean a call on 01263 733469.
