Puccini was on the timetable for pupils from Firside and Kinsale Junior Schools when they created an opera from scratch and performed it on stage at Norwich Theatre Royal on March 15.

Using the composer’s tale of young love La Bohème as inspiration for their performance, the pupils wrote plots and songs in the classroom, and worked with professional opera singers, musicians and drama practitioners to create their individual shows.

The children joined forces at Firside Junior School in early March to work together on polishing some of the songs, which includes an incredible version of Nessun Dorma.

Laura Latimer, who teaches some of the Firside pupils who are involved, said: “It has been incredible. In 10 years of teaching, I have never seen children so engrossed in something like this which lets them spread their wings and see they do have a talent.”

Oliver Bryant, a pupil at Firside, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I could not wait to perform in front of loads of people.”
