The OPEN Youth Trust (OPEN) which provides positive opportunities for young people has British National Mountain Bike Champion Sophie Wright joining them as their second ambassador.

Sophie joined young people in a Drop In session on December 5 at the Bank Plain venue in Norwich, where she spent the time sharing her passion of her sport and her ambition to be the top of her field.

Sophie, who is a pupil at Hellesdon High School when she’s not training, started competing at the age of 12 after she discovered her talent by her love of participating in triathlons, and soon became regional champion in mountain, road and cyclocross.  Last month Sophie competed in her first National Cyclocross race in Ipswich where she finished as 1st junior woman and 4th overall in the Elite Women’s race.

Sophie’s ultimate goals are to become World Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion, and to win the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and she’s already on her way as she’s been accepted on the British Cycling Olympic development programme.  One thing that separates Sophie from her fellow cyclists is her relentless determination, even a severe accident last year where she broke her collarbone hasn’t detered her fighting spirit to be the best at her sport.

Sophie, 16,  from Horsford said: “ I was extremely flattered when OPEN asked me to be one of its ambassadors. The work they do in giving young people the confidence and life skills to follow their dreams mirrors my own passion for my sport. OPEN has already demonstrated that being an ambassador is a two way street and I am very grateful for the support of their youth team and management in giving me a platform in social media, school talks and an open invitation to join in with the amazing activities and programmes.”

John Gordon-Saker, Chief Executive of OPEN said: “We are all really excited to welcome pocket rocket Sophie on board as our second ambassador.  She’s a true inspiration to other young people of her age and living proof that if you want something enough and are prepared to work hard for it, your efforts will pay off.  Sophie is an extremely confident young woman who has thrown herself into our work already and we are backing her all the way to achieve her ambitions.”
