Holt supermarket plans withdrawn

Proposals for a new supermarket in the centre of Holt have been withdrawn following a “helpful and informative” consultation with the community.  Gresham’s School is instead moving forward with proposals for a mixed residential/commercial scheme for the landmark Old School House site.

On January 11 and 12, more than 250 Holt residents viewed the school’s long-term development plans, with some 130 questionnaires being returned.  While broadly supportive of the school’s importance to the local economy and its wide-ranging development plans, the feedback suggested that other uses for the Old School House site should be considered further.

Tim Holmes, director of Endurance Estates, said: “The availability of the Old School House site is a unique opportunity. Our exhibition invited the people of Holt to consider a foodstore there and to give us their views on our other ideas. We are grateful that North Norfolk District Council gave us time to canvas people’s views.

“We are pleased that the clear community responses broadly support the school’s long-term development plans.

“The school, with the backing of public opinion, believes that a mixed residential/commercial scheme will be the most appropriate development for this historic site. So we have notified the Council that we will not be continuing with designs for a supermarket there and that we will in due course bring forward a mixed residential and commercial proposal.”

Adel MacNicol, chairman of Gresham’s School Property development committee commented: “Gresham’s has been associated with Holt for centuries and the School’s new Development Plan is an important contribution to that ongoing association.

“We are determined to ensure that any development on the Old School House site is of lasting benefit to the community as well as enabling the School to achieve the important goals set out in its development plan.

“Late last year the opportunity emerged to offer our site as an alternative town centre position for a new supermarket. We have consulted very widely with members of the public, the Town Council and many other bodies and listened carefully to a very varied set of opinions.  On balance we have decided to revert to our original plans and will now focus on developing proposals for a high-quality mixed residential and commercial scheme.

“We are continuing to develop proposals for sites off the Cromer Road and for our exciting new Sixth Form Centre.”

A further consultation with the Holt community will take place later this year.
