Home residents go football crazy

Football fever kicked off at a local care home as residents welcomed family and friends for an afternoon of sporting fun.

Broadlands Lodge teamed up with the local community to host a football-themed party and join the nation in celebrating the huge summer of sport and its World Cup centrepiece.

On the day, residents and visiting children participated in a variety of football games, including Subbuteo and a tense game of table football where two inter-generational players put their skills to the test.

Helping to bring the spirit of a real stadium matchday was local singer Laura Roome, who ensured guests and residents kept dancing throughout the afternoon with several live performances. After knock-out tournaments, the group sat down to enjoy a session of football-themed cake decorating, before ending the day with a slice of football cake specially prepared by the home’s head chef.

Peter Strangeman, resident at the home at Broadlands Gate, Postwick, said: “I love the activities they put on at the home, but especially the events. It’s a job to describe as I enjoyed it all. It gives you purpose and something to look forward to. The event brought back memories of my younger years, I was always into my sport.”

The event was part of Care UK’s  ‘Goal-den Moments’ initiative, which aims to bring generations together, encouraging residents to reminisce about cherished football memories with the local community and create new memories together.

Adam Naeem, Home Manager at Broadlands Lodge, said: “Since we first opened the doors of our care home, we’ve been looking for ways to connect with Norwich residents, particularly through engaging and meaningful experiences. This event has done just that.

“Football has the unique ability to unlock memories and bring generations together, and it’s been wonderful to see residents sharing their stories and enthusiasm with younger members of the community. We’re proud to play a part in bringing people together and strengthening those important community connections.”
