One of the best-known female vocalists of the Seventies who topped the charts across the globe nearly 20 times is joining the cast of the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime Cinderella.

The former Three Degrees lead singer Sheila Ferguson will take on the role of the Fairy Godmother in the festive spectacular which runs from December 17 to January 19.

Born in Philadelphia, Sheila’s powerful voice graced some of the biggest hits in the pop world with her bandmates including When Will I See You Again, Take Good Care Of Yourself and A Woman In Love.

Her talent has seen travel all over the world appearing on stage at the likes of the Harlem Apollo and the Royal Command Performance as well as countless major concerts and even appeared on the big screen in the Oscar-winning film The French Connection.

When The Three Degrees went their separate ways, Sheila created a hugely successful solo career as an actress and singer and is also a familiar face on TV appearing on a wide range of programmes including Never Mind The Buzzcocks, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Loose Women, and Pointless Celebrities.

She remains a force in the musical world thanks to the release of her recent solo album New Kind Of Medicine as well as being a highly sought-after stage star appearing in hit shows like Fame, Daddy Cool, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Soul Train, and Oh What A Night, as well as being no stranger to pantomime appearing in productions at the likes of Cambridge Arts Theatre and Nottingham Theatre Royal.

Away from the performing world, she is also pursuing a parallel writing career as the author of Soul Food, which chronicled the history of black American cuisine and culture.

Sheila is the latest star name to join the cast of Cinderella, sponsored once again by Almary Green, and will appear opposite Richard Gauntlett who will play Buttons as well as write and direct the festive spectacular, with which he has been associated for 13 years. Producers are also promising more star casting is to follow.

John Bultitude, Norwich Theatre Royal spokesman, said: “Sheila Ferguson is a true musical legend and we are delighted to welcome her to the pantomime cast. Her voice is loved worldwide thanks to being featured on a host of iconic Seventies pop hits.

“Add in her powerful stage presence and the huge enthusiasm she gives every role she takes on, and our panto audience are set to enjoy a soulful spell-caster who will be determined to aid Cinderella in her path towards true love and happiness this festive season.”
