Not many sports clubs can boast that they have a member picked to represent their country. SESMA Martial Arts has had seven chosen to represent Great Britain in the 13th World Martial Arts Games in Florida.

And while the Drayton club is celebrating the achievement, they have a lot to live up to as SESMA students won 21 gold medals at the last championships in 2019.

Isabel Swanborough, Rhys Carter, William Moy, Nyah Spedding, Noah Swanborough, Ben Fordham and Chloe Miller have been training hard and doing well in competitions in order to be chosen, and master instructor Wayne Baker said they had taken the competition judges and organisers by surprise by how focused, precise and strong they were.

Sesma competition coach William has been chosen to be part of the Great Britain coaching team.

But Wayne said: “Unfortunately there is lack of funding and the selected team members have to pay for their own flights and accommodation.

“There is a JustGiving page set up for those that may wish to donate – however little – to help ease the cost for the young sportspeople to represent their country.”

And Wayne said he would love to hear from any local businesses who might like to sponsor the youngsters.

“The SESMA instructors are so proud of them all and their continual hard work to improve and put their skills to the test,” he said.

The club has also recently raised £225 for Time Norfolk, a charity offering support across the county to people affected by  pregnancy loss and baby loss.
