MP pledges to carry on campaign

GP surgeries in and around Sprowston have scored highly in a new performance league table, but Norwich North MP Chloe Smith has vowed to continue her campaign with health ministers for improved access to GP services in Norwich.

Many of her constituents have been concerned about the difficulties getting an appointment – particularly to see a GP face-to-face – and she recently questioned health ministers about making it easier.

“NHS England’s guidance states that GP practices must provide face-to-face appointments and remote consultations, and should respect preferences for face-to-face care unless there are good clinical reasons to the contrary,” she said. “While remote consultations can provide additional choice, flexibility and convenience for patients, this is not suitable for all patients or in all circumstances.”

Chloe welcomed the publication of GP appointment data in a league table, which details how many appointments each practice in England is delivering, how those appointments are delivered, and how long patients are waiting between booking an appointment and receiving one.

The national average score in October was reported as 71pc, with a number of GP practices in the Norwich area exceeding that.

Among the local surgeries, Sprowston’s East Norwich Medical Partnership scored 97.7pc, Old Catton was 87.9pc, and the Magdalen practice was at 89.2pc.

The government says that patients who need an appointment with their GP within two weeks should get one, and those with urgent needs should be seen on the same day.

Commenting on the data, Chloe said: “This data shows good progress for many constituents who value seeing a doctor face-to-face, but I remain worried that others still find it difficult getting through to a surgery on the telephone or getting a suitable appointment. We’ve made progress, with new capacity confirmed for a Sprowston GP surgery since my campaign began, but more will be needed.”
