As people rally round to help each other through the lockdown and pandemic, social media has become an important tool to let people know what’s going on – and Aylsham has a key community resource in a new Facebook group.

The Aylsham Community Assistance During Coronavirus Pandemic Facebook Group has been set up to offer support and information and is a central place for information on shop opening times and social distancing policies, local food delivery services, assistance with prescription collections and advice on mental health and wellbeing, as well as a heartwarming hub of community spirit.

Group administrator Laura Wharton said: “As a volunteer on the group page, it’s overwhelming to witness the daily rallying of help and community spirit. From people offering prescription pick-ups, food shops and words of kindness to local business working tirelessly to provide the local community with food which, in many cases, can be delivered to the door. It’s truly humbling to see.

“Although requests for help are often met by the amazing voluntary acts of kindness of our group members, the key helpline that we urge people to use is the Aylsham Coronavirus Community Helpline – 01263 704475 – where assistance with shopping, mail postage, urgent supplies, or even a friendly chat can be sought.”

Laura says the group has become almost 900 people strong in a matter of weeks. Anyone wanting to join the group should visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/208487440218341. “Everyone is welcome to join this group, the information it provides on a daily basis can make a real difference during this difficult time.”

She added: “The group was set up on March 15 by Karen Gilmore. Since then the group has evolved into a key community resource offering support and assistance in the local area during the Coronavirus Pandemic. It is currently managed by Abbie Hart, Donna Butcher, and myself.”

She said the group offered special thanks to Aylsham and District Care Trust, Aylsham Town Council, Aylsham Community First Responders and the wonderful people of our community.
