Hellesdon Bowls Club is preparing to roll into action again after enjoying a summer of success last year.

And additional recruits are wanted as the club looks to lay the foundations for a healthy future.

The small and friendly club, which plays on a green behind the community centre, is keen to build on a successful season in all three outdoor leagues entered last year.

Led by club captain Bill Johnson, they won the Pensioners league, and came second in the Anglia afternoon leagues.

The club was also third in division one of the City evening league, having won division two the previous season.

For the new season, which starts on April 20, the club will once again be playing in the Pensioners, Anglia and City leagues as well as the Wensum evening league.

“We would love to welcome new members to the club whether they are beginners or experienced, to help us continue our success,” said club secretary Mark Lenton.

“Before covid, which led to both the 2019 and 2020 seasons being cancelled there were around 40 club members. When I joined the club in 2021 membership was down to 23 but ended up at 27 by the end of the season, at the end of 2022 membership was down to 23 and by the end of 2023 season it was down to 19. For the club to remain viable we really need a minimum of 25 members.

“Playing bowls can be enjoyed by all ages and is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours during the summer months.”

The club plays every Saturday afternoon as well as most Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Tuesday evenings.

Hellesdon’s bowlers will be sporting a new look this season as they will be wearing a club shirt for the first time.

Club secretary Mark Lenton said it gave the teams a clear identity. “Last year it was decided that for the 2024 season a club shirt would be available for members to buy.”

Anyone interested in joining can contact Mark (07817305006 or email makeljja@gmail.com) or turn up on April 20 or any Saturday thereafter. The only equipment needed is a pair flat-soled shoes, the first three sessions are free, and club membership costs £40 for the full season.

Hellesdon Bowls Club has a proud record of cup success.
