North Norfolk District Council is continuing to work closely with North Walsham Town Council to help find it suitable alternative accommodation in light of the proposed £1.6m investment from JD Wetherspoon.

Following a report to the Council’s Cabinet in November 2014, a working group has been established with representatives from both the District and the Town Council. The group has worked together constructively and positively to identify the accommodation requirements of the Town Council.

In addition to the support being given to find alternative premises, North Norfolk District Council has committed one-off funding of up to £20,000 to the Town Council to help meet any costs which may be incurred as a result of the relocation.

A decision regarding the future use of the funds from a sale of the New Road building will be a matter for the next Council. In the meantime, the Council welcomes ideas and project proposals for regeneration in North Walsham (and other areas of the District) which would require capital investment.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “North Norfolk District Council and North Walsham Town Council are working together for the benefit of the people of North Walsham and the wider district.

We collectively recognise the vote of confidence which comes from a national chain seeking to invest in the town, and for this reason we are committed to bringing a Wetherspoon offer to North Walsham together with the jobs and investment which will result.

Discussions to find a new home and to help fund the Town Council’s relocation have been productive and I am confident that, together, we will reach a suitable outcome for all concerned.”

North Walsham Town Mayor, Richard Sims, added: “We are surprised that there are suggestions of some kind of stalemate between the District Council and the Town Council concerning the sale of the District Council offices to Wetherspoons.

“Our on-going talks continue to be positive and together with the district council’s offer of funding to help the relocation and its commitment to help us find suitable alternative accommodation, I am confident of a positive outcome in the near future.”
