North Walsham’s young sports stars have been recognised at a glitzy ceremony at the town’s Atrium, as North Walsham High School’s annual Sports Presentation evening acknowledged the school’s high achievers of 2014.

16 year-old Liam Clarke carried off the prestigious Graeme Wilton Award for Sporting Excellence, while the Sports Personality Award – given to the outstanding sports performer in the year group which left in the summer – went jointly to Amy Hemp and Charlie Holmes.

Meanwhile Amy Hemp’s younger sister Lauren Hemp, who was selected for the England U15s football squad against Holland in May, received a rare Platinum Award in recognition of an astonishing year which also saw her selected for Norfolk’s U15s and U17s ladies cricket team.

As well as recognising those who had done well at school level, the ceremony also saw awards given individuals and teams which had competed at county level, including the U15s girls’ cricket team, which emerged as County Champions.

The prizes were given out by special guest, former NWHS PE teacher Anne Harper, who retired this year after 30 years at the school.

School Head of PE Paul Bradshaw commented, “We have a strong sports tradition here at North Walsham, and it is a real delight to publicly recognise those who have excelled in sport over the past year.

“Whilst there will always be a small number who will achieve at the very highest level, it was very encouraging to see how many students were receiving awards at the ceremony, which is a reflection of the important part that sport plays in the life of the school.

“Sport can play such an important role for young people, not just in encouraging physical fitness and healthy living, but also in fostering a sense of teamwork, challenge and achievement which will benefit them way beyond the sports field and into their future lives.”
