After spending the summer reaching for the sky, the sunflowers in North Lodge Park have all been measured and the winners of the Friends’ Sunflower Growing Competition have been decided.

The winner of the tallest bloom category was sunflower number 13, which was planted by Betty Goodson for her great-granddaughter Emilia.

It measured a whopping 10ft tall.

Kenneth Mitchell, who was probably the youngest entrant at just seven months old, won the prize for the smallest sunflower, which measured just 29 inches.

Both the tallest and the smallest sunflowers were taller than last year’s winners, suggesting that this summer was definitely sunnier!

The certificates and prizes were presented at a free music event hosted by the Friends of North Lodge Park by Andy Walker of the Walker Brothers and Val McCampling, one of the Friends volunteers who organised the competition.

The Friends thanked everyone who took part and boosted the group’s funds, which are used to maintain the gardens and improve the children’s play facilities. They recently installed some new swings.
