A magic lamp, a genie, a princess, an evil sorcerer and lots of panto fun – what more could you want in the Sprowston Parish Players’ production of Aladdin!

Making his panto directorial debut, Rev Dean Akrill is relishing the challenge, with rehearsals in full swing ahead of the performances on January 29-31, 2016, at St Cuthbert’s Centre on Wroxham Road.

“I’ve been involved with the Sprowston Parish Players since I arrived in Sprowston from Sheffield seven years ago to take up the post of associate vicar,” explained Rev Dean. “I took responsibility for the performing arts at Sprowston Parish Church and since then I’ve played an evil wolf, an evil rat and Benn Gunn among other roles.”

Rev Dean has experience in writing and directing more serious drama, including last year’s well received “Fuzzy”, but this is the first time he’s directed a panto. “Long time panto director Sheila Tuffield decided it was time to pass on the magic to someone else, and I’ve had great fun re-imagining a great Sprowston tradition and working with a great cast of local performers,” said Rev Dean.

“It’s a fun family show, written by our very own Sally-Anne Davies, who also plays the princess. All the favourite Aladdin characters will be there – Wishee Washee, Widow Twankey, a surprisingly Irish Genie, plus a few surprises!”

As always, the panto will be raising money for the upkeep of the church, as well as two charities – Scope, which supports disabled people, and Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

Last year’s panto raised £1,600 for these charities, which brought the total over the players’ 23-year history up to £32,800!

“So come along and be ready to boo, hiss and cheer,” said Rev Dean.

The Sprowston Parish Players are always on the look out for new performers, or back stage volunteers, so if you’d like to be involved in the 2017 panto please contact Rev Dean on the email below.

Performances will take place on Friday, January 29 at 7.30pm, Saturday, January 30 at 3pm and 7.30pm, and Sunday, January 31 at 3pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. Contact Toni Morina on 01603 484554 or Sheila Tuffield on 01603 419896, or email Rev Dean Akrill on deanakrill@btinternet.com. Tickets also available on the door.
