It was a case of Yeehaa, Here Come The Cowboys at a Hellesdon school when a host of Western-inspired dance moves found their way onto the curriculum.

Lila Anderson and Joe Press, two of the cast from the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, were guests of honour for a special performing arts workshop for pupils at Arden Grove Infant and Junior School.

Pupils learned dance routines from two of the songs in the festive spectacular – 5, 6, 7, 8 and Cotton Eye Joe – ahead of coming to see the show this weekend.

And the special learning workshop was part of the school’s ongoing links with the theatre as part of an umbrella trust alongside Hellesdon High School.

The pupils enjoyed taking part in the cowboy-themed fun. Six-year-old Marshall Leach said: “I liked doing the galloping. We went round in the circle and I learned all the dances. It was a lot of fun.”

And his classmate Harry White, 7, said: “I liked dancing around in a circle although some bits were quite hard. I am a bit tired now.”

Meanwhile Frances Bevan, 6, said: “I liked everything about today. It was really good working with Joe and Lila,” while Emily Evans, 7, added: “I liked doing the lasso moves because I liked moving my arms about. I can’t wait to see the pantomime. I have been to see one before and it was very cool.”

Even the teachers at the school joined in with the session to get full benefit of the Western theme. Joe Press laughed: “In some cases, the teachers were just as good as the pupils. They did very well.”

His co-star Lila added: “It was great to be able to teach the pupils some of the dances from this pantomime. They will now be perfectly prepared when they come along and see Jack and the Beanstalk.”
