Rehearsals are in full swing for Cringleford Amateur Dramatic Society’s (CADS) biennial panto, Dick Whittington, which will take place at Cringleford Church Hall in November.

Now in its 25th year, CADS is a community-focused group with its roots in Cringleford school PTA pantos, before developing into a full amateur dramatic society putting on a play every May and a production every November, which every other year takes the form of a panto.

Of the 40 members, 20 are original or from the first few years, including Isobel Kirk. One of the founding members, she appeared in the very first play and is directing Dick Whittington.

But there’s always room for new members, with positions in everything from directors, producers and actors, to technical aspects such as lighting and set design.

“People are often surprised by how many different roles there are to fill,” said Laura MacKinnon, CADS chairman. “Most people have a go at lots of different positions. I’ve directed, produced, done sound and acted over the years.”

Laura joined the society 19 years ago when she was 11 years old, and she’s come a long way since her first role as a villager in panto, taking the lead role of Dick (pictured) in the current production. It’s a story she’s familiar with, as this is the second time CADS has produced Dick Whittington, the first time being 17 years ago.

“There’s a lot of reminiscing, looking at photos from the last production,” said Laura. “Panto rehearsals are always great fun, it brings out everyone’s inner child.”

Performances are on 15, 16, 22, 23 November at 7.30pm, with and matinees on both Saturdays at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults, £4 for children and are available from Cringleford Stores or by calling the box office on 07919 827912.

Raffle tickets will also be available, with proceeds donated to the Clare School’s fund for a new hydrotherapy pool.
