Pier could get donation stations

Visitors to Cromer Pier could soon be asked for donations to help keep it in tip-top shape.

Electronic pay-points which could raise up to £5,000 a month could be put onto the pier to generate income towards the maintenance of the attraction,

Last year, the idea of a mandatory charge was ruled out by North Norfolk District Council, but the new scheme would put a six-month trial in place over the summer.

A report for the council’s cabinet suggests installing two donation machines on the Grade-II listed pier for a six-month trial over the summer.

Donations would be voluntary, but it is hoped that people would be happy to give a little towards its upkeep. Similar schemes are in place elsewhere, including at St John the Baptist Cathedral, Norwich, which brings in £2,777 a month.

The council was due to discuss the issue as this magazine went to press.

The council has just completed a 10-week programme to refurbish the backstage area at the pier’s Pavilion Theatre.

The changing rooms, kitchen, bathrooms and staff offices had not been refurbished in more than 20 years and needed significant repairs.

The changing rooms have been replaced with roomier, heated facilities, and a wheelchair-accessible lift to the stage has meant that it can accommodate performers with limited mobility.

Council leader Tim Adams said: “The transformational work backstage to Cromer Pier has really opened up so much opportunity for it as a venue, and has helped futureproof it as an asset for years to come.

“The council is committed to continuing investment in this pier … and we’ll look for funding opportunities to transform the stage and auditorium in the future, too.”

General manager Sean Garrett said: “The backstage refurbishment has brought an incredible transformation, making it almost unrecognisable.

“Working in an office where you no longer see the sea through the floor is a huge improvement!”
