Barclays will officially launch its Barclays Local site in Holt next week before the main branch closes in December.

Located at The Venue, the service will be staffed on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9am and noon and 1pm and 5pm, but it will not be able to handle any cash transactions – they will need to be carried out at the post office or another branch.

Chris Channell, Barclays deputy customer care director, said: “We’re delighted to be launching the replacement banking service here in Holt.

“This represents our commitment to customers and the local community who wish to continue to have an in-person banking presence by offering the ability to visit Barclays on their local high street, albeit in a different environment.”

Customers visiting The Venue will be able to access a wide range of services including financial reviews and balance requests. They can open new accounts and have support with digital banking.

But they will be unable to carry out everyday banking transactions as it will be a cashless site.

The service will be opened by MP Duncan Baker on November 7. He welcomed it, saying it would be “a lifeline” for those in the town and its surroundings.

Barclays announced it would be closing the Holt branch earlier this year, saying that  there had been a 55pc reduction in people going in and only 10 customers using it exclusively for their banking.

At the time the announcement was made, Duncan said he was not happy with the decision, saying: “Holt is an exceptionally vibrant and busy town.

“Whilst its population may be less than neighbouring towns, to be left with no bank at all will have an enormous impact on so many people.

“For Barclays to cite the services of Sheringham and Fakenham as the closest branches shows little understanding of the rural nature of the area and lack of infrastructure of public transport, let alone the vulnerability of its older demographics.”
