Review: Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Tuesday nights are sacred in my house – Eastenders and Holby City back-to-back. But I was more than willing to give up my guilty pleasures for a night to see Jason Donovan in drag!

I had seen the film a long time ago but my memory of it was vague – something about drag queens, on a bus, in the dessert, which to be fair is pretty much accurate. The journey, however, is one of self-discovery as Tick (Mitzi), played by Jason Donovan, travels from Sydney to Alice Springs with his two companions to see his estranged wife and meet his six-year-old son for the first time.

From the banter between Bernadette, played by Simon Green, and Felicia, played by Adam Bailey, to the supportive friendship of Tick and Bernadette, there is also an underlying message of girls together against the ugliness of homophobia.

Serious underscore aside, the show is a glam-tastic triumph. The soundtrack had everyone dancing along in their seats to disco classics including I will Survive, Go West and Boogie Wonderland. Add to that countless elaborate feather and sequin-clad costume changes (I was told there were more than 100 wigs involved), and more laugh-out-loud one-liners that you could shake a stick at, and you can’t help but smile the whole way through.

A mention must go to The Divas, whose singing was faultless. And as for Jason, he can do no wrong in my eyes. I loved the subtlety in his performance, which saw him fighting with the flamboyance of Mitzi and Tick’s desire to be a dad. I’m still not sure which is the alter ego: Tick or Mitzi?

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is on until Saturday 13th February. Tickets are available here: http://bit.ly/1V34TTV
