Sixty years ago, in 1965, 1st Taverham Scout Group was formed with six Scouters, six Cubs and four Scouts with Bob Tyler acting as Group Scout Leader.

Today the group is still going strong, with over 120 young people enjoying and benefiting from the fun and educational activities provided by its volunteers every week.

CELEBRATION TIME: Leaders, Young Leaders, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers enjoyed the 60th Anniversary of 1st Taverham Scout Group.

To mark this amazing milestone, over 80 Scouters and Leaders from 1st Taverham took part in an April hike, coinciding with St Georges Day, the Patron Saint of Scouting. The Scouts started at Riverside Retail Park in the city centre walking nine miles, the Cubs from Lenwade walking five miles, and the Beavers walked three miles from Gunton Lane in Costessey…a long way for little legs!

Blessed with amazingly hot weather for April, all three hikes followed Marriotts way, leading back to the Sandy Lane headquarters where the Trustees had a delicious BBQ ready for the hungry participants.

BURGER KINGS: The trustees prepare to feed the 1st Taverham hungry hikers.

After a refuel and a rest, Group Lead Volunteer Graham Edmunds gathered everyone to give a short speech about the importance of the day. All the young people, Young Leaders and Leaders renewed their promise in front of the Scout Headquarters building and a Union Jack, followed by a traditional camp fire and campfire songs.

ON SONG: Scout Leader James Wilson inspires the campfire singing.

The first building used by 1st Taverham Scout Group was at Roundwood, Taverham, and in 1968 a retired double-decker bus was used for Venture Scouts.

In 1971 the Headquarters moved to the old Limekiln site on Sandy Lane, where the Compton’s sectional concrete building, known as the Lewis hut, served as a home to the Group for 30 years. In 2001, following a tenacious bid to The National Lottery by Group Scout Leader Ian Colman MBE, 1st Taverham successfully won a grant to build a purpose-built building on the Sandy Lane site.  Still the existing headquarters today, it also accommodates other local community groups including the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Taverham Day Care.

1st Taverham Group would like to thank the multitude of dedicated leaders and parents, many of whom were Scouts themselves in Taverham, who have helped build this venture and delivered exciting, educational activities to thousands of young people in the local community.
