A North Norfolk Festival is recruiting members for a new choir that will perform in the world premiere of one of the country’s most eagerly anticipated new dramas.

The show, The Events is written by playwright David Greig who created the libretto for the current West End smash hit musical Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.

The Events has already been hailed in the national press as one of the potential highlights of the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. It is a compelling drama telling a very different type of story from ‘Charlie’ and has already created controversy around its subject matter.

It opens as screams echo through corridors, a forest rings with the sound of gunfire and frightened children are led across a playground. At Claire’s choir rehearsal, one of the singers is missing…

This challenging new work examines the nature of forgiveness, the limits of human empathy and the need to understand extreme acts of violence. It is a fictional account of an individual’s reaction to a politically motivated and murderous attack on a society from within that asks how far forgiveness will stretch in the face of atrocity

It is performed by the internationally renowned Actors Theatre Company and directed by the award winning Ramin Gray.

Festival organisers are looking to form a true community choir open to anyone over 16. No previous experience of singing or music is needed, just the willingness to take part in a genuinely important World Premier performance. Anyone interested should email enquiry@holtfestival.org or call 07765 007670.

The Events will be performed at The Auden Theatre on Friday 26 July as part of the Holt Festival. Rehearsals will take place in the week beginning 21 July and will be led by Mark Jones, Head of Music at Gresham’s School.

Following the show in Holt it will transfer to The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh for the whole of August before an autumn UK tour and London season.

2013 will be the fifth annual Holt Festival. In addition to The Events it boasts a further world premiere with its own commissioned composition by former Chicago Symphony Orchestra composer in residence at Mark-Anthony Turnage, to be performed by The Delta Saxophone Quartet on 25 July.

Amongst other highlights are appearances from The Britten Sinfonia with a special celebration of the Benjamin Britten Centenary, former Prime Minister John Major, poet John Hegley, jazz singers Ian Shaw and Sarah Jane Morris and New York cabaret star Lady Rizo.

There is also a week long visual art rail and a full day of free family fun on Sunday 21 July when the entire town centre will be taken over by colourful entertainers from around the UK and France.
