Standing ovations for school stage stars
Aylsham High School is celebrating the success of its 25th musical production, Matilda Jr.
An adaptation of the Broadway hit show by Tim Minchin – based on Roald Dahl’s well-known story – it was full of energetic songs and acrobatics, with dynamic choreography including scooters, skates, skateboards and swings.

Students from all year groups joined staff for four performances, which all received standing ovations. The cast, crew and staff volunteers were thrilled at the reception, and audience members likened the production to “a professional West End show”.
One said: “The students are so talented. If I wasn’t laughing I was crying – such a moving performance.”
Tracy Mitton, who was directing her last show at the school, said: “I am so extremely proud of the talented students in the production. Their hard work certainly paid off; it was truly outstanding and unforgettable.”
Drama at Aylsham High School is studied by students from Year 7, and can be chosen as an option for those wishing to continue to GCSE level. Former students who have taken part in many of the school’s previous productions have gone on to pursue careers in the theatre.
Duncan Spalding, executive headteacher, said: “It was a complete triumph and a thoroughly joyous experience for the audience and for our students taking part. “The creative and performing arts are at the very heart of our school community and give our young people the chance to shine together.
“A massive thank you to Tracy Mitton, our director, and everyone who helped backstage and front of house. It was a resounding success. We could not be prouder of them all.”
