Students from City College Norwich win Design a Sub competition

Students from City College Norwich have won a competition set by the SUBWAY® brand to design and market a new sandwich to be sold in stores across the region. Named The Subrero, the team’s winning Sub design will be brought to life in over 140 stores across Anglia early next year when it goes on sale supported by the students’ marketing materials.

The team of Business with Property Services students from City College Norwich went up against students from five other teams in the region in a head-to-head ‘Dragons Den’ style pitch at Cambridge University before being announced as overall winner. The lucky winners also bagged themselves a share of £1,000 Amazon vouchers.

The team beat off competition from over 80 teams across the region. Using a rigorous selection process, the entries were whittled down to just six finalists: City College Norwich, Northampton College, Thetford Academy, Milton Keynes College, North Hertfordshire College and Peterborough Regional College, who were all asked to present to a judging panel from the SUBWAY® brand before the eventual winner was crowned.

The team from City College Norwich consists of Poppy Devlin, Rhys Lake, Nicholas Keeling, Victoria Payne and Joel Cooper. The enterprising team came up with The Subrero, a Mexican themed sandwich designed to be both a healthy and nutritious option, created for the SUBWAY® brand’s Low Fat Subs range.

SUBWAY® entrepreneur, Bob Moodliar, who chaired the judging panel, commented: “We have been running the Design a Sub competition in Anglia for five years now and I am still always overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and creativity we see from our entrants. The winning Sub design from City College Norwich impressed for its winning combination of tasty ingredients backed up by a well-researched and considered marketing campaign. The team have clearly done their homework and really understand the SUBWAY® brand’s target market.”

Business with Property Services student Poppy Devlin, 17, from South Walsham, said: “We were the first of the finalists to deliver our presentation and we were very, very nervous. We didn’t know how well we had done and it was a shock when we were announced as the winners. It’s amazing that our Sub will go on sale next year. We just had fun throughout the whole of the Design a Sub competition. It helped that our theme and idea was light-hearted, but we also tried really hard and were able to use what we have been learning on our course, especially in relation to marketing.”

Tied into the National Curriculum, the Design a Sub competition asked teams to compete to create the best marketing campaign and business plan around their new Sub, based on the theme of #FeelGoodSubs.
