Take steps to discover more about Aylsham
Aylsham Heritage Centre’s summer walk series begins this month, giving people the chance to find out more about the town’s history.
There are three walks this year, which all start and end at the Heritage Centre.
The centre’s Learning Officer Jayne Andrew said: “We take some archive photographs out with us so that we can compare the past and present in situ. It’s fascinating to see what has changed in the town and – in some cases – what hasn’t changed at all! “All the walks are wheelchair friendly, and dogs are also very welcome. All walks include refreshments on our return to the centre. Find out about the many, many pubs that were once in the town, the wherries that used to sail from here to Yarmouth, the two railways, the different shops and what life was like in the workhouse – as well as the famous names associated with the town.”
There is a different walk each month over the summer and each walk happens three times – once on a Friday evening, once on a Sunday morning and, for those who prefer not to walk, one on a Friday afternoon at the heritage centre. This features the same information and photos.
Walks are £7 per person (£5 for the seated version). Maps of all the routes are available on the Heritage Centre website so you can see the distance covered, but they are all under two miles and last up to two hours. The walks are: Millgate and the surrounding areas: Friday, June 13 at 6.30pm (4.30pm for the seated version) and Sunday, June 15 at 10.30am.
Workhouse and Railway: Friday, July 11 at 6.30pm (4.30pm for the seated version) and Sunday, July 13 at 10.30am.
Norwich Road and Red Lion Street: Friday, August 8 at 6.30pm (4.30pm for the seated version) and Sunday, August 10 at 10.30am.
The centre also has its summer Broads cruise on the evening of July 9, which is its summer social fundraiser and costs £14 per person.
