The Atrium, the independent cinema, theatre and arts hub, has now been recognised as an official charity and has now received its registered charity number from the Charities Commission.

The organisation, who leases parts of the venue from North Walsham High School, had been set up as a limited company earlier in the year in order to achieve its charitable status.

The main aims of the organisation are to provide a place and opportunities for community participation, arts development and exchange. As well as regularly cinema screenings and theatre shows, The Atrium also plays host to community projects, workshops in arts, drama and cookery, training courses such as management and IT and is a busy conference venue for local businesses and meeting place for community groups.

Sam Robbins, Chairman of the new charity said: “The profile of The Atrium has grown and grown since the re-launch last autumn. Being awarded registered charity status is one of the milestones in developing our reputation and standing amongst existing and new project partners.

The new organisation will lease the venue from the high school, to open it up to the community of north Norfolk and lead to the development of new ideas and ambitions for the area. It’s great for the local area to have a new charity with a focus of profiling the area with exciting events, entertainment and workshops.”

Joseph Ballard, manager and artistic director of The Atrium said: “We’re very proud of what we offer to north Norfolk – with a variety of activities, events and fantastic facilities. We can’t promise to provide something for everyone, but we enjoy working on suggestions and seeing new projects grow.

Our work with young people has grown from strength to strength and we’ll be celebrating that with our Summer Club which happens in the August school holidays.

All our existing and future work is credit to local people wanting to take part and to build on this we need more volunteers to help develop activity. Now we have charitable status, we would like to build our bank of volunteers and share our aims and ethos with the wider community.”

The organisation is also putting a call out for anyone who is interested in becoming a Board member or Trustee. The Board currently has four members and would like to increase it to seven.

Anyone interested on becoming a trustee or volunteer can call The Atrium on 01692 400080.
