The Railway Tavern is given a fighting chance

Campaigners have expressed their delight that Holt’s Railway Tavern pub has received the backing of the planning committee at North Norfolk District Council. While the committee chose to defer the application at the January 10th meeting, the comments of the committee appeared to show strong support for the last remaining ‘local’ drinking pub in the Georgian town.

The pub’s supporters provided new evidence to the planning committee which showed the pub was viable and, and along with concerns about the building’s heritage, led planners to recommend deferring the application.

Before the meeting the planning committee had been asked by local residents to save the pub, claiming that once the Railway Tavern is lost it will never return.

Jono Read, a Holt Town Councillor who organised a Facebook campaign in support, said:

“The planning meeting was very encouraging and I’m delighted the pub received such support in councillors’ comments.

The fight goes on but I am pleased that the councillors have seen the potential for the Railway Tavern and believe that, unlike the developer’s claims, this pub is viable.

We ask residents to keep the pressure on the planning committee who still have to make a final decision, and I encourage you to continue to use our local as it remains open for business!”
