As part of their enrichment learning, Thorpe St Andrew Sixth Form students visited New York and Washington DC.

Twenty students and two staff members visited the sights and monuments in both cities in a jam-packed itinerary.

For the first few days in New York city, students visited Macy’s store, which was 11 blocks long and eight floors high. They took a lift to the 1454ft tall Empire State building’s 86th floor. They visited Times Square and experienced the hustle and bustle of the nightlife there and also made trips to the Statue of Liberty and 9/11 Memorial.

They travelled by private coach to Washington DC, where, despite several museums and the Supreme Court being closed due to the government lockdown, they still crammed in several visits. They enjoyed The People’s House White House Experience where they took a seat behind the Resolute Desk in the full-scale replica of President Trump’s Oval Office.

They also visited the International Spy Museum and the White House, and checked out the Lincoln Memorial. They were lucky enough to be in Washington for a Washington Wizards NBA game on the final night.

Head of Upper Sixth Emma Algar said: “These types of enrichment trips for students not only deepen their knowledge of the history and politics of another nation, but provide them with a cultural experience they can remember for a long time.

“A special mention needs to go to Sarah Springall-Colman for organising the trips. She will be doing it next year too. And to Robert Finch for accompanying her; and both for giving up their half-terms to be there.”

A mixture of Lower and Upper Sixth history and politics students and two teachers enjoyed the week-long half-term trip.

One of the students commented: “It was a quality trip, it was incredible to see famous landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the White House and the Washington Monument. It was an amazing opportunity to experience a culture much more fast-paced than the UK, and to visit two of the most famous and influential cities in the world.”
